The tricky imbalance of yearning for the slow life whilst working your pants off to achieve it.
There’ s a lot to be said for the slow life; if you’ve got time. Recently, I came to the conclusion that a lot of us out there are working hard and chasing our ‘perfect’ life whatever and however that may be. As I thought a little more about this, I also pondered about how many people are racing and chasing without actually enjoying the moment. I certainly am guilty of that. I have started this blog so that I can put a few things down, touch base with like-minded people and I can have a bit of a sit down from time to time.
A bit about me: I’m a wife, mom, grandma, daughter, sister who also happens to be a geography teacher. I have two lovely grown up children who have turned into fine, hardworking and compassionate adults, a kind, long-suffering husband who just happens to be an excellent builder too, two adorable grandchildren, three dogs, two horses, six elderly hens and a cat called Pip. Yes, that’s me. I grew up on a farm in Warwickshire and since moving away from there yearned to return to a simple country life (although that depends on what your definition of ‘simple’ is!)
I have a zest for life, love travel (US road-trips in particular), my animals, anything outdoors, family get togethers, renovating our Victorian farm cottage, entertaining, Christmas, my friends, photography, sleep and about a million other things and therein lies the problem.
Eleven years ago when both children had finished school my husband and I decided that we needed to take the leap and move back to rural-life, so we did. We bought a wreck of a house that had been empty for over two years and not touched since the 1960’s – were we mad? Yes. We have spent every weekend since (yes, 10ish years worth) demolishing, rebuilding, restoring and renovating and in my case, cleaning up a lot of brick dust and barrows to the skip. I am hoping that I can share with readers the journey that we have taken in renovating our lovely, quirky rural home ourselves on a very small budget- it’s very nearly finished…
My intention is to blog every few weeks or so (never Vlog as I have a voice for silent movies) about this and that and whatever takes my fancy at the time. It’ll likely be about rural life, house renovation and travel but never political, too serious or too long. So, as you can see my life is far from slow or simple; more of a chaotic whirlwind chasing my tail but I love it and would most probably be bored if it were anything but.
Anyway, there’s a bit of skirting that needs sanding, a roast to cook a and a few books to mark so I will sign off for now and take it up in a couple of weeks.
